So there I was…standing in the supermarket line-up, avoiding all eyes, frantically waving a toy with one hand to my screaming baby all the while putting groceries onto the checkout.
As my (child of the corn) began to reach her crescendo (she was truly in the throes of a formidable meltdown), I threw in a trash mag issue of moms and their babies featuring Nicole, Gwen and Angelina Jolie, (the latter being the bitch who stole my baby name – my dd was going to be Vivienne Mireille but thats a whole other story) which ‘gets me started’ on Miss. Jolie-Pitt.
Beautiful, perfectly put together she pretty much does it all and then some – actress, model, humanitarian, mother to 6 kids- oh and how can i forget to mention her hubby is non-other then the delectable Brad Pitt. (And lets not forget to mention their children are devestatingly beautiful.) Another tid-bit you might find interesting – did you know this supermom boasts that she employs NO nannys. I have one question: How in the hell does she do it????!!!!!
From movies where she is hanging off of a helicopter doing her own stunts, to travelling the world volunteering, as well as making time to procreate with Brad, oh and uh, throw in a few movie premieres where she looks like she stepped off the pages of a fashion magazine – although wait, maybe she actually did. Now I realize this sounds a lot like envy and perhaps some of it is but a great deal of it is not. I truly want to know how the hell she does all this and still manages to drop her kids off at school and pick them up?????
After assuming she had to be lying about employing a Nanny I then wondered to myself – what if she is not?! What if she really is able to accomplish all that and appear as though its effortless being a wondermom. How can she manage to do this when there are some days I cant get out of the house before noon and when I finally do, I sure dont look as put together as her! On those days I consider it a luxury if I managed to get a swab of the mascara brush through my lashes.
After pondering for a few seconds I swiftly came to the following conclusion: perhaps she DOES do it all on her own, maybe thats why she is who she is. That rare person who has all that dynamic energy and is able to propel it into perfection every time. That is why she is Angelina and I am Alison.
The lesson here is NOT to compare yourselves to the celebrity Moms who seem to have it all figured out and look fabulous while doing it. Because its not reality for 99% of the population of us Moms out there. Being a Mom is challenging enough at times without having the added pressure to live up to what society deems a perfet Mother. These women are NOT our role models – most (Im convinced all – EVEN Miss Jolie-Pitt) have chefs, cleaners, NANNYS, stylists, drivers, trainers…. you name it – they got it. They are selling us an idea, a vision, a fantasy that just isnt realistic for everyday Moms.
So here’s to celebrating us ‘real’ Moms who manage to get through those especially hairy days with NO help at all, and even though we may not look like a fashion plate doing it – we are doing are best which is a DAMN GOOD job!
Be proud fellow Moms – we are truly remarkable!!!

UPDATE: sources tell me Ms. Jolie-Pitt does have nannies. Two part-time live-outs. I still dont get how she manages with even that… go figure.
