The Maple Syrup Incident

by Eleanor on February 8, 2010 · 2 comments

During the last week I noticed a sudden infestation of teeny tiny dust bunnies around our house. They were collecting in the corners, sticking to my children’s clothes and drifting around in the wake of anyone walking past like miniature tumbleweeds. I’d been sweeping them up but more and more kept appearing and it took me a while to figure out that it was pilling from my favourite cardigan, which I like to wear, err, all the time.

Today, after a particularly bad food-throwing episode from my one-year-old, I was gathering half-chewed food from the floor when I noticed something that looked like a hairy patch under the kitchen table. A cautious inspection unveiled exactly that, a hairy patch; the collaboration between Saturday morning’s maple syrup incident and the pilling from my cardigan. Cleaning the kitchen floor has recently become the bane of my existence and now it’s official…..it has trumped cleaning cutlery and putting the duvet cover on as my most despised household task.

We’ve all got one…..cleaning the kitchen floor, unloading the dishwasher or putting the clean laundry away…………what’s yours? Tell us about your most dreaded household chores in the comment box below.

The following drives me around the twist:
1) putting my husband’s shoes away in the closet, usually more than one pair. The children have gotten the hang of not leaving their shoes wear they shed them, why can’t he?
2) throwing out the corner of the potato chip bag that my husband cuts off when he opens a bag of chips. Ranting about his vexing habit of just leaving it on the counter produced no results. If you read in the paper about a man found dead with his ears and nose stuffed full of chip bag corners, you’ll know I finally snapped.
3) cleaning up puddles of urine because my little boy hasn’t quite mastered the art of aiming, at least not into the bowl.

I’ll be scanning the papers for news about the ‘chip bag corner’ revenge attack. I hope that you at least get a look-in on the chips. Mmmmm chips…..Oh…and don’t even get me started about putting shoes away…….
