When my sister started school, I was three, and devastated to be left behind as she headed off each morning I started ‘playing school’ with my dolls and stuffed toys, and eventually my little brother. My love for school, and everything it contained – from reading class, to math to recess, was only outdone by love of playing at teaching. It was no surprise to anyone that after finishing my first degree, I went back to teachers college.

Over my 20+ years in education I have been lucky enough to teach in both the private and public sectors, to teach in Canada, England and in Asia, Africa and South America. I have been a classroom teacher and an administrator and more recently have enjoyed writing for publications such as Westcoast Families, BC Parent and Island Parent as well as having an opportunity to share my love of learning and teaching on the radio.

I hope this blog will become an ongoing conversation and a resource for parents about how to engender a love of learning and a joy for school in children across Victoria. Welcome to Teacher Talk.

Hi Penny. Long story, in shortcuts: we are planning to move to Victoria September 2012 with our son, 9year old.
When we start process looking for school for him (coming for school hunting this coming MarchBreak) we just learn about his difficulty with his behaviour. He is lovely boy, not causing any problems at home but having problem with being focus at school all day long. Living in Victoria and being a mom you may have more information about private and public schools there. I desperately looking for some help and directory but non of opinion exist in web about schools. Very unusual situation. Beside school I will be looking for some professional help for our son to help him with move and his problems. I don’t want him to start in new school with frustration.
I will appreciate your help with directing me when I should looking for help.

Best regards from cold Ottawa

Tamara
