ipod nano/ipod touch

Postby 3_pack_mom on Tue Nov 18, 2008 12:43 pm

Yet another item on a xmas list, this one for my 12 year old DS. Very responsible kid, so I'm not worried about him losing it or anything, but I would like to know how well they work, and what your experiences are with them!

TIA!

The Ipod's area great - so easy to download songs.
I think at that age a Nano would be great - they hold a lot of songs -

They are pretty cool. Big price difference between nano and touch though. Touch is also similar to an iphone without the phone but the screen is easier to damage than the nano.

I am not a big apple fan but I like the iPod's. DH has one and loves it.

For a 12 yr. old, I'd be going with a Nano. The touch is expensive! I only know that 'cause dh is looking to get one and I almost choked when I saw how much it was going to be.

I would say a Nano. Even an IPOD Shuffle at this age would be suitable. The IPOD , as other PP have mentioned, is very expensive and far greater risk of a Repetitive Motion Injury as well.

I have both a nano chromatic and a touch (spoiled, I know)

I would recommend the nano for a 12 year old, as the touch has wireless internet, and we all know what boys can get into when their internet time isn't supervised... you can have access to wireless just about anywhere, which is why I love it, and why I'd be hesitant to give a pre-teen one

The chromatic is awesome and can play video's, hold photo's, and play music :)
Very fun, and lots of colors to choose from!

I'm a little confused by those saying the price is so much different.. when I looked at future shop, the nanos were $199.99 and the touch was $239.99!

Duckybug.. do you know if they can download the games from the Apps menu onto the Nano, or is that only for the touch? And is there parental control on either of them?

TIA, and keep the opinions coming, please!

The Nanos at London Drugs are $169.99 for the 8gb and 139.99 for the 4gb(regular prices)....so Future Shop is overpriced. I believe Walmart and Zellers are even less.

Games are only for the Touch. The iPod Nano can show vids, pics, and music. The iPod touch that is 299.99 is only an 8gb. It is the same as my iPod Nano, and while it will hold a few videos and a few hundred songs, it won't be very good for games or anything. If you are going to get a touch, I'd go with a bigger GB, and then of course it will cost more. For a 12 yr old, unless he is doing a lot of gaming on it and you are fine with him surfing the net, then I'd just stick to a Nano. What would be be mostly using it for? Watching videos or just listening to music?

Also I forgot to add, that I would totally recommend getting a Zcover for it. It's a rubber cover that it fits into, so if dropped it helps protect it from breaking or scratching.

I am unsure about letting him surf the net, but he does have a cell phone already and wouldn't he have access to the same things on it? He's a younger 12 and not into a lot of the things that I would be worrying about yet, but I'm sure that's soon to come :(

I think he would be mostly listening to music on it, although he has mentioned watching movies. That was one of the big things about the touch, apparently it has a speaker so that if he wanted to listen to music or watch a movie, he didn't necessarily have to use headphones? At least I think that's what he said.

Does anyone know if the games for the ipod touch stay on the ipod, just like on a cellphone when you download them? Or do you have to access wifi to play them?

Ugh, I know absolutely nothing about these things :?

With a cell phone you can have Internet Access blocked. ...you can't with te IPOD Touch.

Watching Movies on the IPOD is quite expensive. You can download Music for free from Ares.com but Videos and Movies cost money (Movies more than video) from any site we have tried.

ETA Videos you may be able to get from Ares for free as well...I can't check with my dd right now as she is not home.

well if you are a pirate :D vids and music don't cost you anything...iPod Nano's and iPod touches will play both and you just hook it up to your comp with the usb cord supplied and download to the iPod using itunes (which you can upload music and vids to from your comp...(so you don't necessarily have to use iTunes to download just as a transfer program) You can use a cell phone to search the net, but it costs money and it's not very accurate or readable. An iPod touch is just like a mini laptop. You can connect to non secure or secure Internet. There is no parental control since their isn't a server like say Telus or Shaw. It's really like a mini laptop. You can do just about anything with the ipod touch as you can with a laptop.

ares.com (galaxy I think) has 2 sites....one where they charge and one that is free. It's not 'pirating' if it is offered from a legit site for free. I don't think you get all the choices of the Music but you get a lot of current and older ones. Then you transfer to ITUNES and download the music. I seem to rememebr there is a fee for the videos but I can't remember.

What sizes do you guys have? I'm not sure what the best size to be looking at is if he wants to be able to keep a movie or two on it?

thanks again, everyone, you've been really helpful!

LV: I'm not admitting anything, but I *may* have a pretty large stockpile of movies on my comp. If I did have a bunch of AVI files, would the nano or the touch take them?
