best place to buy grains and bulk health food
I was wondering where is the best place to by grains (to grind into flour) and other bulk health foods in Victoria/Westshore.
Also does anyone have any recommendations for a good grain mill? I am going to try grinding in my Blendtec but would be interested in other peoples experiences/advice
thanks
Kristy

For organic bulk items Planet Organic and Lifestyles are where I go -Lifestyles is usually a bit cheaper than PO...and they are both cheaper than Thrifty's!
I haven't been yet, but you can buy local stone ground wheat flour and much more in Cabdoro Bay: http://www.forgoodmeasure.ca/about.html
Not sure about their prices...

We love For Good Measure - clean and the bulk food moves - never stale.

Yes! This is a great place to buy bulk! They have reasonably priced locally grown and milled whole wheat flour.

Re: best place to buy grains and bulk health food
On the island we buy bulk grains from For Good Measure, Lifestyles and very rarely Planet Organic because they're more expensive. There are a few places we buy from in Vancouver when we're there.
I'm selling one like this http://www.urbanhomemaker.com/productca ... -p1375.htm with a stainless steel bottom for $120. It's in new condition. These are said to last a lifetime. My MIL bought one when she was first married and it still works the same. I'm selling because I recently purchased a Country Living Grain Mill which is one of the better manual mills if that's what you're looking for. They're expensive so best to find a used one. We're working to reduce our electricity useage and live off grid so the manual made more sense for us.

Re: best place to buy grains and bulk health food
Just made it down to For Good Measure today -not bad!
Yes, it would seem that a few items are anywhere from 2-10 cents cheaper per 100g, and that they do have some selection I haven't seen elsewhere -notably the local ww flour.
I didn't find the prices on the regular things I get much different from Lifestyles and seeing as it's totally out of the way for me to get to Cadboro Bay village, I will stock up on the local flour when I'm in the area, and get whatever I happen to need at the time when I'm there, but that's about it. (The grocery store next door, Peppers, has a few items that we use too...their Wildfire bread is a bit cheaper than elsewhere too -still keep meaning to see what it costs at the actual bakery, lol!)
I can work Lifestyles into any weekly-biweekly visit to see friends in town, and can zip in to PO when need be.
Hey Peter, are there other items offered at FGM that aren't sold elsewhere?
Thanks!

Re: best place to buy grains and bulk health food
I don't buy from the bulk section at For Good Measure. I order a 10-15 kilo sack at a time and usually get our wheat, oat groats, cane sugar, pumpkin and sunflower seeds from there. I throw the seeds in the freezer and store the grains in the cool basement in sealed containers. Buying by the sack is usually cheaper than their sale prices. They have an email flyer with their sale prices that comes out once a week that you can sign up for.

Re: best place to buy grains and bulk health food
My mother and I have been buying in large quantities from here:http://healthykitchens.com/index.html?menu_id=551
Her name is Carol, and once a year she does large grain orders, usually held in the parking lot at Glenwood meat. I bought 4 yrs ago a 40 lb sack of oats, it just ran out. LOL. My mother buys seeds (sunflower, sesame) she buys oat groats.. We both have the bosch universal machine. My mother has the neat grinder and mill attachment to hers. Mine just is a mixer with cookie and bread hooks, also has a blender on the side. LOVE IT!!

Re: best place to buy grains and bulk health food
We have bought our grains from
http://healthykitchens.com/newsletter.html
We buy wheat to grind for flour and groats to cook for oatmeal and grind for flour.
Because of the size of sacks it is only necessary to buy every 2-3 years depending on your usage. As long as you store your grains safely from moisture, insects and vermin, it keeps very well. I only grind the wheat as need, usually refrigerate a container of ground flour.
You can contact them as sometimes she has extra due to people not picking up their orders.
We having been buying there for years.

Here is a lady, Nicole in Sooke that coordinates big bulk orders. She is super nice.
