Should I worry?

Postby mumeee99 on Wed May 23, 2007 8:07 pm

Let me preface this post by saying I've been suffering with a really bad migraine all day so I'm not thinking 100% clearly. I came home tonight from my son's gymnastics to my 4 year old howling that his ear hurt. His ear was red but no fever but he was crying so much I decided to take him into a clinic anyway. The clinic doctor says he has an ear infection and a chest infection, no idea where this came from because he's been acting totally normal accept for a little cough for the last few days, eating fine, etc. Anyway he perscribed amoxicillan for him. I went and got it and gave him the first dose about 10mins ago, THEN it dawned on me. My youngest has never had antibiotics before but his brother and his father are severely allergic to penicillin, so now I'm panicking. I never thought to mention this to the doc, he asked if HE was allergic to anything and I said no but now I'm concerned. Should I be worried about this? I'm probably not going to sleep tonight cause I'll be watching him like a hawk, but I'm wondering what others think.

Thanks

I don't have any advice for you but I wanted to say I'm really impressed that your 4 year old has never been on antibiotics until today. He must have a super immune system!

Ya I've always said he has an awesome immune system, he never really gets sick and honestly I expected the doc to look at me tonight like I was crazy and tell me he was fine, when he came back with the ear infection and then chest infection I almost fell out of the chair.

You could phone your pharmacy as the pharmacists are very knowledgable. You could also talk with someone on the Nurse's Helpline.
It would be important to watch your child for several hours and do not administer any further doses until you check with a physician. [/b]SOMETIMES NO REACTION OCCURS WITH THE FIRST DOSE, BUT MAY OCCUR WITH A SECOND DOSE/SUBSEQUENT DOSES.

Please check with a Dr./pharmacist before administering any further doses just to be sure.

My grandma (dad's mom) and my dad are both allergic to penicillin and I was told that I was, then.
When I needed antibiotics once the doc asked if I was allergic to anything so I said "penicillin." He asked what happened when I took it and I explained I had never had it, only that my grandma and father were allergic. He sighed and wrote me a prescription for penicillin ... I am not allergic!

So, I'm not sure what to tell you other than keep an eye on him.

My mom and myself are deathly allergic to penicillin and my son has had amoxicillin before with no ill effects. Don't worry too much he may have no problems at all. Sending healthy vibes your way.

My friend was allergic to penicillin and she had been holding a child that was on amoxcillin. The child was sleepng on her and sweating a little and my friend got a wicked rash form the kid's sweat. I guess some of the antibiotics had been excreted in the child's sweat and had affected my friend's skin giving her a reaction.

Well he didn't react last night, I talked to the pharmasist at BC Nurses Line, he said to keep giving it to him because he may or may not be allergic. So I gave him his 2nd dose this morning and I feel like a sitting duck. I'm taking him to see my doc today because he never stopped crying last night, even with tons of motrin in him. I also really question the chest infection part because he's got no real symptoms of that accept for a minor cough. The whole thing is really weird because he's never really been sick, and if he has been sick it is super minor and over in a day. So for this to come on so quickly I'm just baffled.

I have one ds who is allergic to penecillan and when the doc wanted to give it to my youngest ds I was worried but he said just because one person in the family has it does not mean anyone else will have it. He said there is no connection.

I hope your DS will be better quickly. I was the poster that mentioned the Nurse's Line and a pharmacist. It is always better to be safe than sorry and not to assume that a person will not have an allergic reaction. Antibiotics can have cross-sensitivity so it is good to question the Dr. or pharmacist.
Hope your DS is feeling better very quickly!
