Oil rigs.. I know TONS of people who have worked em.. Dated a few.. And if your hubby has a strong will then Id say go for it.. Its great money.. But you are gone from home LOTS and long periods of time.. And the drugs and drinking is heavy! Im not saying ALL of them do it.. but thats the life up there realistically.. they work hard all day and party hard at night. But it is good money.. If you can hack the distance and him being away.. I would say go for it.. Theres TONS of adds in the papers for oil riggers and stuff.. They even train on the job.. I would say Edmonton or Red Deer would be middle ground as for the area to be closer to him.. I dunno what else to say.. But its tough

Just wanted to let you know that my now ex bf worked on the oil rigs in Alberta, and I found he had to travel often, so he was gone quite a bit ..... I don't know if that is something you could live with or not.

One other thing to consider is the danger factor of the rigs. Not just getting hurt on the equipment, but my little brother got respiratory infections all the time when he worked on the rigs. There is all kinds of stuff flying through the air and in all ends up in your lungs. The reason the pay is so good is the job is damn hard, damn dangerous, and you're always away from home.
And ya...coke is rampant on the rigs.
That being said...there is good money to be made. Just google oil rigs alberta and you'll get a lot of dif companies that you can apply for online.

My brother is out in Alberta right now. He's out there for a little more than half the year (late fall to mid spring) working in the oil fields. From what he's told me it can be quite dangerous out there (certain experiences he has told us about....eek!). Money (wages i guess) he says is alright but it's the bonuses after doing a job where the real money is. There is definitely money to be made out there.
As to applying, I haven't a clue. My brother's employer (summer job) works out there and got my brother into it a few years ago.

My husband is there right now and loves it. It is very hard work but he is with a great group of guys and the company does drug testing which is a bonus. Email me if you want more info on wages etc. and you can look up some info on the COADC website. Good luck!

We moved to Calgary in May with the intention that my husband was to go work up north as an electrician. We got here and he ended up getting in with a great company. He doesn't make as much as he would up north but he didn't want to be away from us...we had just had a new baby in June as well.
As far as real estate goes...prices are high. Their is no rent control here so your rent can go up 100 % in a month. We are fortunate to not be renting here.
As for everything else...we absolutely hate it here. We are islanders and always will be. We are already looking to move back to Vic. I would never raise my kids here. Way too much violence and crap of a big city, not too mention it's ugly.
Well, I sorta went on a little rant there. That is just my opinion. Lot's of people love it here, just not us.
