If you are anemic and take iron...

Postby Max on Tue Jun 12, 2007 9:41 am

Do yourself a favour, and don't ever run out of your iron tabs and forget to pick up more. I've always been anemic and was officially diagnosed when I was pregnant with dd. I had never really felt 'run down' but took the iron anyway. I ran out a of pills a couple of weeks ago and forgot to get more, didn't think much of it though. Well, since then I've felt a bit tired, but chalked it up to being busy. A week ago, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I became completely lethargic. It took me HOURS to get out of bed in the morning. I was having the kids raid the pantry for granola bars for breakfast so I didn't have to get up. Day 2 of that I figured out what was wrong and had dh pick up my iron tabs. That was 6 days ago, and only just today do I feel on the way back to normal. It's been the most exhausting, sluggish, slow week of my entire life.

Iron - a most underrated but essential mineral. :D
Don't give a poop about a catchy sig...

The Cook Street Midwives office recommended Hemoplex as one of the best sources for iron pills with the least consitpating factor.

Aww hun, I'm glad to hear you are feeling better now.
That would explain the burger craving. ;)

I have taken it ( hemoplex) through 3 pregnancies at my midwifews urging. I'd check with your health care provider to be sure for you but I beleive it's safe.

I don't have the bottle handy but I think it says on the bottle to check with your physician if pregnant. I can't remember if I took it at the end of pregnancy or immediately after.

I think we bought it at the compounding pharmacy on Fort Street near Cook. Not sure of the price but I recall it was pricier than most. The Vitamin Shop on Broad Street would likely have it and they're usually the least expensive in town for most things.
