How Old is Too Old to Go Back to School to be A...

Postby Anonymous Posts on Sat Nov 03, 2007 5:28 am

DOCTOR?? so, I am an RN, and I love it. I also think that I would love and would be a fantastic dr. (JMHO  ) My dilemma: I am almost (gulp!) 40 (well a few years to go) and I would have to do a couple of years of sciences before even applying to Med school...So by the time I was done, I would be well on my way to !50! That can't be right!! Is that too old??? I certainly don't feel that old?? Would I even be accepted to med school at that age?

Another alternative that I have to do more research on is the Nurse Practitioner Program...a little more attractive because it is still nursing, so there isn't that 'rushed' feeling of going to your GP's, kwim? NPs have a little more time. However, other than at the James Bay Community Clinic, I don't know of anywhere else that they exist in Victoria.

Phew, I feel that I have 'come out' and truly admitted this to myself! Thanks for reading! I have to get on this asap!

My Dad was 36 when he went back to school to become a doctor! And then he specialized so he was closer to 44 by the time he was done. I say if you can manage it financially and time-wise with your family, then go for it! It is a huge committment but you can do anyting you set your mind to! Age is just a number!! Plus, with your nursing background I think you will have a leg-up on some of your fellow classmates......experience is invaluable. :D

I know someone who is in their mid 50's and just finished up her RN and is now a nurse. You're NEVER too old to go back to school. Go for it!

You're never too old. Way back when I was pregnant with the twins, the student who was getting her med degree was in her late 50's. She was a nurse, the kids had just left the nest and that was what she wanted to do with the rest of her life.

I'm 34 and going to be going back to school in the next year or so to become a teacher. Can't wait - I love school. It is my strong belief that you are here on this earth to evolve and learn.
Don't give a poop about a catchy sig...

LMAO

Too funny! Thanks for all the positive responses ladies! I was busy this am; I have researched the Island Medical Program again, and discovered an info session this Tuesday night (!!) that I will attend!!! Also, I have put out several emails and phone calls to research my decision and enlist the help of those who have more knowledge of these things than I!

Thanks again--your replies gave me the motivation I needed to get off my butt!!
