Finger Foods for a one year old

Postby Laurie-Ann on Wed Jan 26, 2005 5:14 pm

My son is 13 months old and I am really stuck at what to give him for healthy finger food snacks. I have a 3 and a half year old too, but I just can't remember what we gave him.
We are giving him cheerios, cheese, banana, other soft fruit, rusk cookies, gold fish crackers, and soda crakers.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Laurie Ann

That sounds like a lot of variety. We are in the same boat as you, too. I find it's too easy to feed them carbs.

Some things that work for us... pieces of apple, grapes, and all sorts of fruit. Veggie sticks like carrot sticks (big so they can't choke), cucumber were popular for us.... things to dip in cream cheese or salsa.

Just going through that with my 12 month old daughter :D . I like to give her Heritage-o's (cheerios without the additives), steamed carrot sticks, thinly sliced apple, w.w. or multigrain toast in strips with unsweetened jam to dip, pasta (like macaroni or small rotini) with a little bit of sauce (messy!!), celery stick with the stringy stuff taken off... and I think you listed the rest of the stuff she eats :)

Hope this helps!

Hi Laurie-Ann:

Here's a few suggestions:

Veggie Booty from Thrifty Foods - Caitlyn loved the stuff!! Available at the end of the chip aisle. Ingredients: Corn Meal, Rice, Organic Soy Flour, Canola and/or Sunflower Oil, Spinach, Kale, Cabbage, Carrot, Broccoli, Parsley, and Sea Salt.

Also available is Pirate's Booty - with Aged White Cheddar

Also to try: raisins, green pepper pieces, strawberries cut up, yogourt to dip things in, veggie chips from costco (come up and I can give you some to see if he likes them before you buy them), small pasta well cooked, cut up pickles.

In addition to things already listed:

Rice Cakes
Corn Thins (corn rice cakes basically)
tofu weiners cut up thin
Frozen veggie mix (the one with carrots, peas, beans and corn - Teagan LOVES this)
quartered grapes
Oat Cakes

My toddlers loved the following - all cut up into tiny pieces:

Veggie weiners
Dried apricots
leftover chicken
cheese (once they start dairy)
Rebar or other dried fruit/veggie bars
Raising kids is part joy and part guerilla warfare.

how about:

avacado slices (my dd's fav!)
cucumber slices
whole green beans (you can steam them fresh, but my dd loves them from a can)
mandarin segments in their own juice
mushrooms (sauteed up)

My son's favourite is sweet potato french fries, and apple fries. Basically you can take any fruit or veggie cut it into fry form bake it for 10 mins or so then it is something that they can hold yet soft enough to gum without choking. another thing we do is take fruit, slice it thinly ( with the side of the cheese gratter ) then take small cookie cutters and cut it into shapes. Usually it is so thin that there isn't a risk of choking and they are fun to eat. Another idea is to take carrots and shred them, then they are finger food but now a choking risk .

Thanks so much for all the great idea's. I feel almost parinoid about him choking now, reading some of the reply's to my post. I should be giving him more things than I have. He only has 5 teeth and I think that is why I am worried about giving him pieces(even if they are small) of apple, carrots and cucumber. I am going grocery shopping today, so I am going to buy a whole lot of different things.
Thanks ladies and have a great day :)

not sure if this was mentioned... going back in time with my memory here...my youngest is 8... I shredded raw veggies to get them into liking the taste of them. ie: carrots, celery, etc....
If I am going to be unique, I am going to be unique with flair.
