chores for a 2 year old

Postby tm on Sat Jul 16, 2005 12:55 pm

We've instituted "chore morning" every Saturday a.m. My 4 year old DS dusts the tables in the living room and then uses the light weight Dirt Devil to vacuum the rec room. Currently we have my 2 year old DS throwing the dirty laundry down the stairs to the laundry room. I'm having trouble thinking of another job he could do that doesn't require a whole lot of skill, patience or precision. Any thoughts??

My DS is 22 months and he enjoys dusting and sweeping. Maybe you could get your little guy a small broom and dust pan?

This morning my 2 year old surprised me by being a very effective wall washer! She also runs toys back to the toy area, puts dishes in the sink, and laundry in the baskets (which you mentioned already).

my daughter loves cleaning and she is just two- it started with whenever she would color on anything,(waterproof crayons are the best!!) we would hand her a baby wipe and get her to wipe the crayon off!!! she now will go get a wipe and start wiping down the walls for fun- she does the kitchen cabinets, the fridge and the stove (bottom), often the tv screen etc.. and she is good for cleaning her room- we have a laundry tub that stores her toys and she drags it around the house picking up her toys that are scattered...

Our 2yr. old dd's chore is to dust the t.v. screen and the tops of the tables. We just give her a wet dish rag and she goes to it. She just loves it, particularly the t.v. screen. She'll polish it for a half hour. If she still wants more she also wipes the fronts of the lower kitchen cabinets.

Great ideas, thanks girls! It's hard because the "fun" job is chucking the mounds and mounds and mounds and mounds of laundry down the stairs-- which my 4 year old always wants to take over from his little brother! I'll get my little fella dusting and wiping. I'll make good husbands out of them if it kills me!

Our daughter:

- cleans up her toys and puts them away
- puts her dishes in the sink
- feeds the cat
- helps sort laundry, "folds" the laundry (stuff like facecloths, knit dishrags so I don't care if they're not folded the "right" way), loads the washer, and puts things into the dryer
- dusts the things she can reach
- helps vacuum

Hey Tracy,

Good thoughts! My mom has B clean the hardwood floors. Gives him a spray bottle with water and vinegar mix and he uses the swiffer mop to wipe up and cleans the floors. He loves it! Also dusts, sweeps the deck, waters the plants in and out and cleans his toys.

Gotta see you soon!
