Peeing pants still is it normal?

Postby BUSYM&D on Fri Sep 16, 2005 9:22 am

My 6 year old still has accedents in his pants. I have tried everything ignoring it, scolding him, encoraging him when he doen't. I had blood work done to make sure it was not a blood sugar problem. He just waits untill it is an emergency and than ends up peeing himself. I am afried he will start getting teased at school if he doesn't stop. Does anyone else have or had this problem? or any sujestions as to help stop it would be appreciated? :?:

I have no suggestions, my oldest is just soon to be 5. But he has accidents. Sometimes he's so involved in what he's doing, or he really truly doesn't feel the cues . . .every time he runs to me mortified, and it happens so rarely. Their bodies' do grow at different rates, the bladder sometimes has to catch up with the rest of his body, so it can cause accdents as it's too small just them. How often is this happening? I'm sure he's embarrassed too, no need to scold him. What about those underpants for older kids with this problem? see them advertised in parenting mags but I forget the name. No one at school will know, and your son can feel safe about it, about no one finding out or being embarassed, for something he can't help.
For a minute there, I was myself.

My almost 8 yr old step son has this same problem. We had tried everything to no avail. What finally did work was my hubby put his watch on a one hour timer & every time the watch beeped dss went to the bathroom. After a while we up it to every two hours, then every three. At that point he was so used to the schedule that he did it on his own. That worked for us. Good luck with it, I know it can be very frustrating.

It can be common at this age group. Sometimes their bodies grow, but their bladders haven't caught up! I wouldn't punish him for it, but try positive re-inforsement for when he does go!

Medical?

Postby BUSYM&D on Sat Oct 01, 2005 12:36 pm

Thanks for the advise. He has so many accidents (as many as 3-4 a day) I thought it must be medical. However, nothing has showed up, and they keep saying it is behavioural. In my opinion other than blood sugar tests not much invesegation has been done. Although I do not want to put him through extensive testing if this is just behavioural. this is why I was hoping someone out there who had an experience with this could indecate to me whither it was medical or not in there situation and what the cause was.

I would at least push for a ultra sound - this is non-evasive and could show any bladder/kidney/uereture problems. 3 - 4 accidents a day doesn't sound behavioral to me.

Good luck - 6 is a very tender age for self esteem
