Victoria version of a crop circle?
OK, I'm kidding (kind of)...there's a very strange structure in north Oak Bay that dh and I have seen on several online maps (Google, CRD Atlas), and for the life of us, we can't figure out what it is. It's huge, rectangular, and doesn't seem to have any access from any road.
Do any of you know what it is? Go to the CRD Natural Areas Atlas (http://www.crd.bc.ca/maps/natural/atlas.htm), click your way to north Oak Bay (just below and right of Mt. Tolmie), and see if you can figure it out. And please tell me - we're dying to know!

So weird.... I used to live a few houses away on Plymouth and never knew it was there.... and went down the trail at the end of Kendal up Mt. Tolmie and also didn't see it then.... shows how observant I am LOL....

Are you talking about the blue rectangle by Cromwell?
edited: you must be. I am stumped! I don't live far from there. That's going to drive me nuts now.

It's the CRD water reservoir.

It may be. If you turn on the water feature - you see the pipe leading from the big tank on Mt. Tolmie down past the rectangle....

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's a reservoir. Infact I think that my grandparent's showed it to me once.

It really is the reservoir. There is a smaller one on the top of Mount Tolmie, too, that covers a portion of Saanich to Cadboro Bay.

Hmmm...apparently, the water reservoir is at the top of Mt. Tolmie - this area is down and to the right of the park (Just inside the Oak Bay border). It looks like a rectangle cut into smaller rectangles. It looks like it's accessible from Cromwell Rd, but not accessible from Mt. Tolmie itself.
Anyone?

Supposedly it definitely is a reservoir. The one on Mt. Tolmie is Saanich one, the older one that you're asking about is the Oak Bay one. Supposedly the grass on it always dies, which is why it's brown.

My husband said it's a 2nd reservoir. He grew up at the base of Mt Tolmie and frequently walked up there. He said the easiest way to see it is to drive up Mayfair Dr and turn right on Cromwell then head straight down that road and there's a gate. You can park there and walk to it.
