Veggies in the fridge.....
I usually keep my bought beggies in there plastic bags from the store until i need them....if i cut up an onion etc i wrap it in paper towel and put it in a ziplock......i have some of those holey green foamy pieces to "keep them fresh" on the bottom of the drawer too.....so here is my question.....do i need to keep them in the bag? is there anything wrong with throwing them all in the bin together....carrots, celery, broccoli, tomatoes, etc?
Me and my plastic worry again
and....my fridge doesnt have the dial marked for freshness on the individual bins .....which goes where....fruit high or low .....veggies high or low?
thanks for any input!

Plastic bags are fine to use it is just your own preference whether you put your fruit and veggies in them or not. You can do it either way. I would leave your fridge set the way it is. Don't play with the dials if your food has been fine till now leave it.

Re: Veggies in the fridge.....
I dont see why you couldnt as long as you go through your veggies quickly. I'm thinking if you didnt go through them quick enough and a couple spoiled it would be really gross/messy and then you'd have to throw out other veggies.

I'm smelling a fridgesmart ad comin' on any second now!! But it shant be from me as I don't have the energy.
BUT if you MUST put your veggies in the plastic bags poke holes in the bottom but it is better for your veggies if you take them out of the bag as plastic traps moisture and leads to quicker decay. Some fruits (apples, pears etc.) shouldn't be kept next to other veggies or fruits as they encourage them to ripen much too quickly.
Same with onions and potatoes they give off gases and turn each other sprouty and mushy.
Tomatoes shouldn't be refrigerated.
AND if you're not going to be keeping veggies in the plastic bags then forgo them all together at the grocery store (my "green" moment lecture of the day

Re: Veggies in the fridge.....
They'd dry up and shrivel fairly quickly...... but if you don't like plastic bags, you could put them in tupperware....

Re: Veggies in the fridge.....
I keep mine in Tupperware containers too (Fridgesmarts) as they last 2-3x longer than just keeping them in the crisper (in or out of the bag). And, if you're really bad like me and forgot your veggies in your TW container for say a month (or longer
) you don't have a really big mess to clean up in your crisper drawer!

You need to go to one of Brenda N's Tupperware parties. She'll get you all sorted out.

If you're interested.... I now sell light weight cloth produce bags, you can store the veggies/fruit in the bags & put them in the fridge.

Re: Veggies in the fridge.....
I don't keep my veggies in plastic bags...and they are fine. I just throw them in the drawer. I do separate the apples in their own drawer, and if I buy a 5 lb bag of carrots, they stay in their plastic bag - but the broccoli, peppers, zucchini, and lettuce go into the same drawer without any plastic bags.
Oh, my onions are not refrigerated, nor are my potatoes, but they are in separate ends of the kitchen, and tomatoes live in my fruit bowl!

Re: Veggies in the fridge.....
I cant believe we haven't heard from Brenda yet!!!
I thought that there was no way i could afford fridgesmart containers but but bit the bullet when they were on sale and I tell you I throw out WAY less vegetables.... i do forget about them more but because they are in containers but things like broccoli can last for about 2 months in fridgesmart and lettuce about a month which amazes me every time

Re: Veggies in the fridge.....
Sorry to take so long to chime in on this one. I'm working hard tonight and my computer is only half willing to work with me
Fridgesmart is definitely what I would recommend. I can keep mushrooms for three weeks and they still look like the day I bought them. They start to shrivel a bit by 3.5 weeks. If they'll keep mushrooms they'll keep everything.
The best news is that there is a big 8pc set on sale this month that is less than the price of the regular 3pc set.
The 8pc set is on sale for $72 until May 30

Re: Veggies in the fridge.....
OP I agree fridgesmart is your answer. I need my veggies somewhat sorted and seperated and I couldn't just throw them in the drawer...
Brenda why did you have to go and post that sale!?!?!?!
I have no money woman! And DH still doesn't know about my last order... at least I have a month to save... remind me before the end of the month
I will find the money...
And for what it's worth I told DH the other day I'm throwing out all my "other" plastic and switching everything to tupperware or our corelle dishes for leftovers. I think he's just happy I'm going on mat leave soon... although that means less money for more tupperware... hmmm catch 22.

Re: Veggies in the fridge.....
Sorry OPYeah I thought about mentioning something about how I want my tupperware without selling it... maybe one day Brenda, maybe one day. I'm a fantastic public speaker but I'm not ready to go into selling tupperware yet

Re: Veggies in the fridge.....
At the moment my dh is worried about the food recession and I am concerned about the plastics leaching into the food.......hmmmm where to spend our money?
I guess if we spend now on tupperware to keep food healthy and fresh longer then we would actually be saving on food because it would be higher quality and wouldnt be thrown out! lol. thats good logic right?
Brenda did you email me earlier? Someone from tupperware emailed me and i replied but i dont htink it went to the right place....well regardless.....would you be able to email me info or a catologue for tupperware? That sale for veggies looks good but still a bit out of my price range....will ponder it a bit more though
what is tupperwares take on the bpa? is it in their products?
