Teething and Pain control

Postby chickypoo on Mon Aug 25, 2008 8:47 am

Hi there
Has anybody out there used both Motrin AND the Teething Tabs? I use Motrin every day since my daughter's teething is soooooo bad...then a dose of tylenol before bed...but I feel like I am drugging her. I tried the teething tabs, but didn't notice they worked that great....so started motrin again along with the teething tabs....the bottle doesn't say not too so I am assuming it is ok? She doesn't act all drugged and sleepy so again, I am assuming it is ok? I just wish these teetch would poke through already! THese poor babies!

We use Tylenol as a last resort. Our usual line of defense is teething tablets and things to chew on. She likes a cold wet wash cloth or teething ring. Hyland's also makes a teething gel that doesn't freeze the mouth. I personally wouldn't use Orajel as it does freeze the month and increases the risk of choking as it could also freeze the throat.

My kids teeth like yours. DD would scream for days at a time and DS the same.

What we did/do was mix camilla in with the Motrin  Neither would take it by itself.

I found the Camilla calmed and then the Motrin would kick in. We never used the Hyland Teething tablets but they are fine with Motrin.

We tried to reserve the Motrin for the nightimes but sometimes 15 minutes of screaming owwiee and I can't let him suffer anymore.

The lovely thing is once DD stopped teething she has used Motrin 2x in 2 years.

I am going to have an "End of Teething Party" once DS FINALLY gets his 2 year molars. They have been coming in for 4 months now and haven't poked through yet. 5 years of teething children

Cheers,
Lara

Thanks Lara....
Geez, 5 years???
So did you go through spurts of using Motrin everyday? I have been lately and I feel so bad...but it does help I think! My daughter is definitly getting molars as she has her finger in the back of her mouth constantly! She is 12 months old and only has 4 teeth, so I gather she is getting a bunch at once...poor babies!
thanks for the input gals!

Well lets just say I should have owned shares  And yes there were days when they were getting 3 out of the 4 maximum doses because her pain was so bad. Some kids don't get bothered too much by teething but boy my two did. I always had reinforcement when 30 minutes after dosing they went to sleep, stopped crying, stopped fussing etc.

I felt guilty a lot when giving it but then I talked to my amazing Health Nurse. She said teething is like having a stick poking in your jaw. It hurts like crazy for some kids and it just isn't fair to leave them in pain.

She said that Motrin and Tylenol is completely safe if you don't go over the maximum dose. She also recommended dosing on weight, not age. I called Tylenol/Motrin and they sent me a handy dosing chart with Motrin on one side and Tylenol on the other. It has mid-weight doses that the bottle doesn't have.

5 years is 3 years for DD and now DS 2 years so far. She teethed slowly like your DD so her 2 year molars came through at age 3. Whereas DS is already working on them and isn't 2 yet.

Cheers,
Lara
