You gotta hit Dollar Giant - they have tonnes of things for $1.25 or less that are great for loot bags! :)

I also go to Michael's and look in their discount bins for cool stuff, usually marked down to .75! (the other day I got 6 rubber duckies in their sale bins for .50 each!, for my dd's loot bags this month!)

I usually put in:

1 full sized chocolate bar (from Dollar Giant or Costco)
1 pair of kids socks (split up from the 8-pack at Costco)
Glow sticks (split up from the 15-pack at Michael's)
a colouring book (from Dollar Giant)
a pack of crayons (from Dollar Giant)
anything else that is little & cheap and that I think they will enjoy.

I tend to go a bit overboard on the loot bags as I enjoy making them so much! :o I usually spend about $5-6 on each bag. HTH. CharleneK

For my sons birthday we made disney themed songed cds. (really inexpensive but takes some of time making them!)
And we added a small bag of gummy candy. the kids Loved the CD we had lots of great comments from their parents after. (some of the songs we included were... The Hot dog song from mickey mouse clubhouse, life is a highway and real gone (cars movie), You got a friend in me (toy story), Akuna Matata(sp? Lion King), Beauty and the beast, send me on my way (the song from ice age)
etc..etc...
We also used lightscribe cds and put a picture of my son on the front, they looked cool!!!

Michaels also has cheap tubes of glow sticks.

Stickers
Smarties
A Pencil & eraser or a few crayons
Juice box
Whistles (you can get the party-type ones that unroll as you whistle at dollar giant.

Definitely michael's for the glo sticks, a tube of 15 of them that turn into bracelets is $1.50

I go to dollar giant and buy 6-packs of notebooks and 12 packs of coloured ballpoint pens or fancy pencil crayons or crayons and put 2 in each. Then I get 6 packs of sheets of stickers for about $1.50 at other dollar stores, and then buy 6 packs of teddy grahams or fruit snacks or some other not-horribly-unhealthy treat to add on sale(about $2 a pack for the cookies). Oh and 10-12 packs of the birthday blowers are available at dollar giant.

So I did 12 takehome bags for about $15.

This year I decided to not do "goody bags" for my 6 year old & instead got a pack of thank you cards from the dollar store & put in a pass for one admission to Saanich Parks & Recreation (good for skating or swimming).

In the past I've done sidewalk chalk, bubbles, crayons, granola bars instead of chocolate bars (40 box from Costco), a few colouring sheets I printed off of the internet to go with whatever theme we had & dot to dot sheets too.

This year for our boys 6th birthday we gave tech decks to all the kids, this is a little old for your younger one, also not sure if you have boys or girls. you can get hot wheels cars for a good deal too. The tech decks were under 4 dollars and ended up being cheaper than getting a bunch of stuff that they ussually end up throwing out anyways. They were also a hit with the girls as we got them ones with a pink decal.

I really like the CD idea as well, I will have to remember that for future bdays.

I really struggled with ideas for my four-year-old DD's birthday party tomorrow. I didn't want to go the dollar-store route, wanted to avoid 'made-in-China' where possible, and didn't want to spend a bomb.

In a flash of what I consider to be rare brilliance, I came up with geodes - those beautiful crystal filled rocks that look ordinary on the outside but have crystals on the inside. I got them from BC mineral world (about the size of a small egg), wrapped them inside patches of denim from an old pair of jeans, tied with string and labelled with the kids names. They look adorable.

Depending on the theme:

- Pails & sand toys with fruit gummies and worms

- Blank shirts or bags tied up with paints on the inside & a fruit bar &/or chocolates or kindersurprise

- Tea cups (from the thrift stores) with tea plates, use a handmade hankerchief to wrap up some handmade chocolates into & place in tea cups

- Train whistles, candy whistles, bandana's & blank white hat (for the conductors hat) they can paint/draw/glue things on, the bandanna can be folded like gift wrap & filled with all the goodies

:)

PS - I'm getting some white cotton Hankerchiefs in soon! Great for tie-dying!! Even better for the environment! :-D

we were just at a party yesterday and all the kids got a small puzzle and a ring pop each. Nice and simple. Instead of ring pops for the little ones you could give a pack of gummies.
