Has anyone ever bought a refurbished TV?

Postby MizJennaKH on Tue Aug 09, 2011 11:46 am

I'm looking at the BestBuy website. We watch TV probably less than 10 hours per week, more during Winter with movies etc. Might be a good option.

Has anyone ever bought a refurbished TV? They seem really affordable but I'd like to hear your opinions!

Thanks very much :)

I bought one from XS Cargo about 5 years ago. IMO it seemed like a great deal. The TV there refurbished was almost 1/2 the price of getting a similar one from Future Shop. Within the 1st month the screen stopped working. I loaded up the TV and my receipt and took it back for an exchange only to find that they were almost completely out of the model that I had. The only remaining TV was their floor model which was terribly scratched. I ended up taking it as the alternatives would have cost me a great deal more out of pocket. The floor model that I took home was also refurbished, and has lasted us ever since without any issues.

I think it's really hit or miss, but with a larger company like Best Buy I would have to say that you'll likely have a better chance of getting any issues that you may have taken care of. I would recommend getting a warranty plan though just in case.

I think there are a lot of free TVs available (CRTs) - check out usedvictoria.com
I have opinions of my own - strong opinions - but I don't always agree with them - George Bush

We bought a new 46 inch tv from Costco in the spring. We set it up, started watching a hockey game on it and decided we wanted higher definition. We repacked it and returned it to Costco the next day. We were told because it had been plugged in, it would be returned to the manufacturer and sold as refurnbished.

I've bought a refurbished digital camera before and it lasted for 7 years with no problems. I only replaced it to keep up with technology -it still works great. HTH

Very helpful, everyone! Thanks! Best Buy has some Phillips Refurbished TVs and I'm feeling much better about a possible purchase.
