Your fave non-fast food places to go for a quick bite
OK, so we don't do fast food--places that bring their food in by the truckload, half-cooked, pop it into some grease.... you know... the McD's, all that gross stuff.
BUT every once in awhile, you need to grab a quick meal, and bringing a tuna sandwich from home or a thermos of soup just doesn't cut it. So we have a few places where the food is good and we know that you can eat quickly and carry on to whatever it is you're doing. Some of our faves are:
Naanwich
Pho Hoa
Noodle Box (as long as you phone your order in ahead of time)
Most cafes for a sandwich or wrap
Most sushi places (although only dd eats 'real' sushi--ds and I only eat the cucumber stuff, lol)
Opa (the souvlaki place at Tillicum mall)
Help us expand our list! Where do you like to go for a non-mass-produced, relatively healthy meal that is quick? Sit-down or takeout.

Hernande'z on Yates St. They have an "express menu" for those in a rush.
Pig BBQ Joint on Blanshard is good and fast as well. I like their crispy mac and cheese!

Re: Your fave non-fast food places to go for a quick bite
We always liked the Japanese grocery on Shelbourne across the street from Fairways...They had tons of sushi, large bowls of miso soup for $1 and hot selections.
We also went to Benny's Bagels in Hillside Mall (is it still there?) and Edo Japan in Hillside Mall. Thrifty's also has a good deli and will make you yummy sandwiches or you can buy salads and other things. We have lived in Duncan for the past 5 years and I have never been in a McDonald's, Wendy's, or Burger King here. We've had lunch at Tim Horton's (though I personally don't find their food very good), and tend to grab our "fast food" from the sushi places, and Thrifty's and Safeway delis.

We love
Zap Thai in esquimalt! Best chicken pad Thai and an awesome buffet lunch for $12(I think!) on Fridays
Another good place is the "donair shop" on esquimalt road (cash only though!)
Oh & Nando's !!

For downtown LOVE
- Foo (delicious asian street food at Yates & Blanshard)
- Pig (yummy pulled pork at Johnson & Blanshard in the Atrium)
- The Fort St Cafe (clubhouse wrap with added avocado is to die for)
- Hernandez (amazing mexican at decent prices in the St. Andrew's building on Yates)
I only really eat out downtown when I'm working. We have gone to Beacon Hill Drive Thru, Noodle Box, and a couple others on occassion but not frequently. Highly recommed the above four though! Also really love the sushi outlets in the Bay and Mayfair. Can't recall the chain name but I find their sushi fresh and yummy (& even though they're probably terrible for you, I LOVE their Crazy Cali rolls)!

YUMMM... the Lunch Kit for sure! It's on Douglas by Yates. All homemade fresh food.. They make the best roast beef sandwich hands down!!! They don't use any processed meats. All cooked and sliced there and all homemade soups. Their roasted tomato and their mushroom soup is amazing

Re: Your fave non-fast food places to go for a quick bite
Fairway Markets in Westshore Town Center/CanWest Mall (not sure of other locations) has amazing wraps...and they are SOOoO cheap. I can get a wrap big enough to feed myself and three toddlers (and I'm not a small eater) for $5. It's Subway-style, except with more options, and way fresher food. They also have sushi and Chinese food and deli food, but I always just go for the wraps...

Re: Your fave non-fast food places to go for a quick bite
There's a great Mexican cart in the Cook St village that's amazing. Better than Hernandez, I think.
Someone already mentioned the Japanese place across the street from Fairways on Shelbourne. Very reasonable priced and fresh.
Saigon Nights, very fast, friendly service, we often order it to go
Polish Deli on Cook St
Lunch kit, on the expensive side but always fresh and, big portions, and delicious
The Ethiopian place in the Cook St village.
Salad Loop

Devour, OMG soooooo good. Small but fast and unbelievably good food!
Not sure if it's reopened after the fire but I've always loved the vegetarian place in Market Square
