Benefit to DD's allowance I didn't see coming

Postby OnceHarmony on Sun Jan 22, 2012 8:23 pm

Today DD wandered and wandered...and wandered around a store wondering what to spend her allowance on.

She kept picking toys up and then wondering out loud how much fun she would have with each toy she picked up (and then put down).

Now that was one benefit to DD's allowance that I didn't see coming. That she would start questioning the fun of each toy and not wanting to spend her money on something that she wouldn't get a lot of fun out of.

She did FINALLY pick something. It will be interesting to see how much fun she has with this toy. If she doesn't I hope I can use this as a lesson later.

I hear ya but with a different feeling on it. I knew what my dd would love and use all the time but she wasn't sure she wanted it so we spent an hour looking at toys and she finally bought herself a $2 smelly pencil. She has $18 left on this gift card and I am not looking forward to the shopping trip. Glad you saw the bright side. I just got irritated.
You can't use logic to talk someone out of a belief they didn't use logic to get themselves into.

i had a bank account very early as a child... at which time I immediately started hoarding money. sounds like your daughter is one smart cookie.

really I just wanted to post on your thread before tinkerbelle got here

I get ya. Sometimes it is hard not to be irritated but I find it just slows her down more so I just breathe. If I was hungry, hot, tired, or had to go somewhere else I probably would have been irritated. DH was there too and I told him that when out with DD we have to slow ourselves down to her time.

We don't do allowance yet, but I do give the kids spending money when we go on a trip. It totally cuts down on all the trinkets and treats they ask for. When the ask for something, we say sure, is that what you want to spend your money on? We never have to say no, we say it's your choice. Usually they buy a pack of gum the first day (they don't get gum very often, so it is a big treat), and then we find they end up spending the rest of their money on the last day of the trip or they end up taking it home having decided their was nothing they really wanted and they'd rather save the money for another time. I find the same thing with $2 birthday parties... they really have a hard time choosing their birthday toy; being in charge of the money really makes them think of what that money yields in terms of play value. When it's my money, however, they want to buy EVERYTHING!

So true. When Hillside had that Cinderella carriage ride DD wanted to ride it. It was a dollar so I said I would see if she had a dollar and looked in her change purse to see if she had one from her allowance to use. She said No, mommy. Not my dollar. Your dollar. (I used her dollar)

Giving her her own money has sure cut down on the gimme gimmes when we are out.
