do you smoke?

Postby anonymous KIV on Sun Mar 06, 2005 10:52 pm

just a question....as I have bought a few things that just STINK like smoke. I dont know how to ask without sounding rude if they smoke in the house or not. Its ok if they dont, but what if they do? I dont want to offend them and say well if it smells like smoke i dont want it. So it just got me thinking, how many of you smoke? Dont get me wrong, my dh smokes but he does OUTSIDE. Away from me and the kids. But maybe its just me, but when you smoke in a house everything in it smells like smoke.

I also wanna know how many of you used to but quit. And if you did quit, CUDOS to you!!

My partner smokes, but smokes outside. That would be a major turn off to buy something that smells like smoke...

I quit smoking two and a half years ago, but recently started (lightly) again  and ONLY OUTSIDE :!:

BUT_ when I am asking someone about used goods for sale, I always ask because you are right- it stinks! Especially clothing and upholstered items.
I don't think it's rude at all, just your preferance.

Personally I wouldn't be afraid of offending someone by asking if they smoked. I feel that it is my right to know. I would not want it if it smelled of smoke. My husband and I are strong non-smokers. My father in law smokes, and we do not go over there as a result. If we must go there, we give them 24 hours notice, and we only stay in the one room where my Father in law doesn't smoke, he also doesn't smoke while we are there, or for hours before we get there. When they bring a gift over to our house for us, it always smells. Even when they return a book it smells of smoke. Yuk, it disgusts me.

I quit around 8 years ago and was still a social smoker (if I was drinking and around others who smoked) until the day I discovered I was pregnant with DD#1 and I haven't touched once since and do not even crave them anymore. In fact I can't even stand to walk past someone smoking on the street the smell just really gets to me now.

I quit at the age of 23 from being a pack a day smoker. I hated the way I smelled, hated the way I felt. Hated that my fingernails were yellow, and that when I moved out of the house, the walls of my room were BROWN, with white squares from where my posters used to hang! And I decided that there was no way I wanted to smoke around my kids (they didn't come along til I was 29, but I didn't want to be quitting because I was pregnant). Cancer runs in my family as well, and I didn't want to up my odds.

I have a real problem with the smell of cigarette smoke now, I just can't tolerate it at all. And if anything came into my house that smelled of it, it would probably go into the garbage. It just completely grosses me out. So I would probably ask too, and not buy things from people that smoke.
Don't give a poop about a catchy sig...

I was a smoker for almost 10 years and had tried quitting tonnes of times with no success, BUT the day I found out I was pregnant with ds #1 was the day I quit and that was 4.5 years ago. I am really glad that I did quit as my husband who also smoked, him for over 25years, now has really bad asma from smoking and it wouldn't have been fair to him or our 2 sons for me to continue smoking. I have to admit that I miss it everyday that I am really stressed(and that has been alot lately as we have just moved), but I won't give in because quitting when I was pregnant was the easiest way,(wanting my baby to have the healthiest start) and I will never be pregnant again so staying a nonsmoker is the only way.I am so proud of myself because I honestly thought I would have always been a smoker and now I am not. When I got pregnant with ds#2 I went for my first check up and my DR asked if I had gone back to smoking and when I told her no, she said that 94% of all women who quit while pregnant go back sometime within the first 2 years. I was so surprised to learn those stats.
I dont' ever want to offend anyone, but I need to ask when buying things as just having the smell in our house would bother my husbands asma.

Quit AGAIN!

But I really think this is it. The grande finale. 8)
Had a similar experience to Cathryn, and it sure sucks.

I was smoke free for years after becoming a mom, and started
again, quit again, started again, quit finally over 7 years?

Blech, I really can't stand the smell now. I almost gag. So I
really hope this is it.
Anyone who never smoked I don't think can realize how
powerful and evil nicotine is. I rank it right up there with
any other drug addiction. I've heard that heroin addicts say
cigarettes are harder to kick.

I agree that you have the right to ask the seller if it's
a smoking or non-smoking home the item is coming
from. I bought ONE thing from here that I had to put
outside to air for days, because I didn't think to ask first.
I will not buy from her again. :!:
Not impressed. :?

Smoking

Postby The Boys' Mama on Mon Mar 07, 2005 9:40 am

I can smell smoke on non-smokers who are married to outside smokers - you can't keep it off your clothes and then that odour ends up in the house and of course the furniture too - I would ask when purchasing items - maybe those who post items for sale could mention in their posts that the items are coming from a non smoking household so that the awkwardness of asking isn't there....just a thought!

This post is so coincidental! This has happened to me before too - and I was wondering if I should be asking from now on if the home is a non-smoking one....Great thread!

Great question
Yup this has happened to me also. I bought a bunch of books off this site, and when I got home I was flipping through them and noticed that they smelled like smoke. I had to get rid of them because I didn't want my son sitting on my lap with the book in our hands breathing in the stale smoke and then putting his hands in his mouth.
Now I always ask if it is a non smoking home. If it isn't I don't buy from the seller.

Smoking

Postby The Boys' Mama on Mon Mar 07, 2005 11:03 am

Good for you for asking - I cannot stand smoking! I get that it's an addiction but really....the worst is when you see a mum pushing her kid in the stroller with one hand and smoking with the other - my God!
