Fun and educational nature house - all ages welcome!
Come down to the old "refreshment stand" in Esquimalt-Gorge Park (formerly Kinsmen-Gorge Park), and re-experience the Gorge Waterway!
The Gorge Waterway Education Centre is an active learning centre that highlights the many unique features of the life and history of the Gorge Waterway. Located in the heart of Victoria’s richest urban ecosystem, the new Centre provides hands-on learning plus the chance to visualize how “green” choices can actually affect life in the area.
The young—and the young-at-heart— are all welcome to explore our interactive displays. Get an up-close and personal glimpse at the secret lives of marine creatures at the "touch tank" Seaquarium; wonder at the beauty and complexity of local plant and animal life using our microscope and other equipment; understand our impact on these lesser known and under-appreciated plants and animals as you interact with our hands-on Gorge watershed model. Or just take some quiet time to browse in our library and discover our other resources.
Our friendly staff and volunteers are there to guide you through the displays and answer questions. For a more in-depth experience, we also offer a wide range of educational programs tailored to the age and learning styles of school, daycare and community groups.
We are open to the public every Sunday from 11am to 4pm, and for special events in the park. Public admission is by donation (suggested donation: $1/child; $2/adult during public hours), and program fees vary. Donations and fees help keep the Centre open, keep displays and resources up to date and provide new ones, and subsidize groups with financial challenges.

Victoria Gears up for Cyclebetes Family Bike Festival
Vancouver, BC – August 25, 2010 - It’s active, healthy and FUN! If your family is like many Canadian families you search for activities where everyone can participate--together. A healthy, meaningful and shared experience for parents and kids! “Last year we noticed that moms and kids were waiting at the 100km elite ride finish line for the cycling dads. They would have bikes with them wanting to share in the cycling fun and spirit.
Here it is: grab your bikes and get going! Cyclebetes hosts a series of cycling events across the country while raising funds and awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The Cyclebetes National Relay kicks off in Halifax on August 14th and makes its’ way across Canada wrapping up in Victoria on September 5, 2010.
Cyclebetes Family Bike Festivals run in tandem with the relay at 8 major centers on the cross country route. This year we created The Cyclebetes Family Bike Festival, an exciting event for the entire family. It’s a great opportunity for families to get out and get moving together.
The Victoria Cyclebetes Family Bike Festival will be on September 5, 2010 from 1:30 – 3:30 pm at Gyro Park, Cadboro Bay. It will celebrate the completion of the Cyclebetes National Relay. There will be a 120km advanced ride, 60km intermediate ride and a 5km family/kids ride, an obstacle course, safety station, skill games and lots of fun!
