Elizabeth Buckley School is an independent K-6 school in Victoria. Our inclusivity, small class sizes and STE(A)M focus are what makes us unique.

What is a STE(A)M school?
STEM is an acronym that is becoming well known for the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. At EBS, we believe that the arts are an integral part of every child's learning, and we have added the "A" to create STE(A)M. Our STE(A)M school provides an emphasis on discovery and exploration, with STEM subjects interwoven with literacy, humanities, and physical activity.

Many people see the arts and science/math as separate and distinct areas of learning. We believe that science, technology, engineering and mathematics - the traditional STEM subjects - are the foundation for art, innovation and creativity; they are inseparable. STE(A)M brings it all together. STE(A)M is where math intersects with musical composition; it's in the relationship between engineering and sculpture; it's in creating a love of literacy while also teaching digital literacy; it's in the understanding that creativity and scientific discovery bossom from the same seeds.

Why STE(A)M?

Children are born scientists. They spend the first few years of their lives observing, experimenting, trying, failing, and trying again. The result is incredible development in the areas of language, perception and problem-solving. When children enter a traditional school program, the focus often shifts away from independent thinking, problem-solving and experiential learning in context to paper-and-pencil tasks that focus on finding the "right" answer. This inhibits risk-taking and independent thinking because children don't want to be "wrong." Children who are taught concepts in isolation find it difficult to engage in learning because they don't see the relevance to their own lives. They learn "procedures" for skills like math, but don't recognize how to apply them in real-world situations. The result is that many children find math intimidating, eventually dismissing the subject because they don't consider themselves a "math person." And this is often accepted. However we would not accept if our children said the same about reading! With our increasing reliance on technology, technical literacy, critical thinking and the ability to problem-solve are skills that play a crucial role in a child's long-term success. The most effective way to develop these skills is to engage children in real-world activities that allow them to build their understanding in meaningful contexts. The children love this type of learning and... (sshh!) often don't see it as work!

Our Roots
Elizabeth Buckley School was founded 25 years ago as the school for deaf and hard of hearing children in Victoria. Over the years the school has evolved, and today Elizabeth Buckley School continues to offer services to students with hearing impairments within the context of a more diverse student population. Our classrooms are warm, nurturing environments where "typical" children and those with special needs learn side by side in an inclusive, integrated setting. In keeping with our roots, we offer ASL instruction to all students in the school and use a "total communication" approach during instruction.

Who We Are Today
EBS offers an exceptional education based on the BC curriculum, and STE(A)M enrichment programs to enhance students' learning opportunities. Learning at EBS is co-operative, engaging, exciting, and respectful of each child's individual needs. At EBS, experienced BC Teacher Regulation Branch-certified educators and skilled Education Assistants work to support each student on his or her individual journey to success. The school provides a solid educational foundation and nurtures a life-long love of learning. Students enjoy a well rounded program including field trips, extra-curricular activities and sports programs. Our close-knit community of families enjoy time together for all-school potlucks, movie nights, camping, picnics, talent shows and more. We welcome you to become part of our "family".
